Zotero is where researchers keep the papers they trust. NotebookLM is where those papers become a study guide, literature-review assistant, and citation-aware workspace. The missing piece is a clean, repeatable way to move your Zotero sources into the place NotebookLM can actually read.

Citebridge uses Google Drive as the bridge. Connect Zotero and Google Drive once, and Citebridge writes your PDFs plus a consolidated Google Doc index into a dedicated Drive folder. Add that folder to NotebookLM, then use NotebookLM's source sync to keep working from the latest version.

This avoids unofficial NotebookLM scripts, cookies, and browser automation. Your reference workflow stays cloud-based, supported, and built on the Google Drive ingestion path NotebookLM already understands.

The manual way to get Zotero into NotebookLM — and why it breaks

NotebookLM does not offer a public consumer API for individual researchers, and unofficial libraries rely on fragile browser or cookie-based automation. Manual upload is safer, but it turns into repeated export work: find the PDFs, upload them, rebuild source context, and remember what changed. Citebridge keeps the Drive source folder current so NotebookLM can re-sync from a stable place.

How Citebridge syncs Zotero to NotebookLM

  1. 1 Connect Zotero so Citebridge can read the references and attachments you choose.
  2. 2 Connect Google Drive with the limited drive.file scope; Citebridge only manages files it creates.
  3. 3 Citebridge creates a dedicated Drive folder and uploads available reference PDFs.
  4. 4 Citebridge generates a Google Doc index with titles, authors, abstracts, DOIs and source links.
  5. 5 Add that Drive folder or index Doc to NotebookLM once, then use NotebookLM source sync when you need fresh context.

Frequently asked questions

Does Citebridge connect directly to the NotebookLM API?

No. NotebookLM does not provide a practical public API for individual researchers. Citebridge uses Google Drive as the supported bridge because NotebookLM can ingest Drive files.

Do I still need to add the source in NotebookLM manually?

Yes, once. Citebridge prepares and maintains the Google Drive folder; you add that folder or index Doc to NotebookLM, then NotebookLM can sync sources from there.

Will Citebridge access my whole Google Drive?

No. The Google Drive connector uses the limited drive.file scope, so it can only manage files Citebridge creates.

What happens when I add new Zotero PDFs?

Citebridge pushes new synced PDFs to the Drive folder and refreshes the index Doc. In NotebookLM, use source sync to pull in the updated Drive content.

Can this help if a Zotero item has no PDF?

Yes. References without PDFs still appear in the Google Doc index with their metadata, abstract, DOI and source URL when available.
